In pencil on verso: "for F De Peyster Esq." DePeyster was a 19th century official of the New York Historical Society. Military topographic map. Covers the village of New Windsor and surrounding area in the town of New Windsor, Orange County, New York. Shows roads, buildings and landforms. Pen-and-ink, pencil on laid paper. Shows relief by hachures. Soiled and stained, creased, frayed and abraded. Mounted on cloth, bound and cropped, disbound and silked by subsequent owners. Cleaned after removal of backings 1999; some fill remains. Re-lined with China paper. Sheathed in mylar. Tentatively attributed to DeWitt and dated based on comparison to his map, "The Winter-Cantonment of the American Army ... 1783." The style of hachures is fairly distinctive among American maps of this period. Title proper is from recto and may be original. Watermarks. Upper piece: "T.VITROUIL G.DALANCON" under unidentified symbol. "G.DALANCON" is probably the firm name; compare Gravell and Miller foreign watermark no. 449 of 1737. Lower piece: LIN 1780 under crest containing fleur-de-lis triplet. Both pieces are likely from the same sheet: note unusual formation of "0" and "O" and conformity of chainline measurements.
