Abigail Adams letters, 1787-1815, undated

Abigail Adams, who served as the second First Lady of the United States, was the wife of President John Adams, and the mother of President John Quincy Adams. Correspondence between Abigail Adams and family and friends, including her uncle Cotton Tufts, and her son John Quincy Adams. The letters discuss matters relating to family, illness, personal finances and the running of a household, the U.S. Congress at Philadelphia, and American politics. One letter, signed, dated Boston, July 20, 1787, to Hon. Cotton Tufts, comments upon Shays' Rebellion.

Correspondence of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr preceding their duel which resulted in Hamilton's death on July 11, 1804. Also correspondence of their seconds, Nathaniel Pendleton and William Van Ness, and two letters from Elizabeth Hamilton, Alexander's widow, to Nathaniel Pendleton. Alexander Hamilton was the Caribbean-born American statesman, politician, legal scholar, military commander, lawyer, banker, and economist who served as United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1789 to 1795.

Album of approximately 100 albumen photographic prints taken from 1861 to 1865: and printed later. Images include Navy ships and sailors during the blockade of southern ports; army camps; Edisto Island, South Carolina; plantations and African Americans; Fort Warren, Massachusetts; and Andersonville Prison, Georgia. Many of the Edisto Island photographs were taken by Henry P. Moore of New Hampshire. This album is vol. 20 from a 31 volume set of photograph albums compiled by Arnold A. Rand and Albert Ordway.

Collection of 133 silver gelatin photographs of Manhattan, approximately 1938 to 1960, taken by amateur photographer Arthur W. Grumbine. Part of the collection consists of street scenes and views of individual buildings taken in various neighborhoods around the city from the 1930s through the 1960s, and include images of street vendors, construction sites, signs and storefronts, building interiors, aerial and riverfront views, Times Square, Washington Square, South Street, and vignettes depicting life on the streets of Manhattan's Little Italy, Chinatown, and Lower East Side.

Association for the Benefit of Colored Orphans records, 1836-1972 (bulk 1850-1936)

The Association for the Benefit of Colored Orphans was founded in 1836 and was originally located on Fifth Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets in Manhattan. The Colored Orphan Asylum was among the earliest organizations in the country to provide housing, training, and employment specifically for African American orphans. During the Draft Riots of July 14, 1863, the Colored Orphan Asylum was attacked by a mob. At that time, it housed some 600 to 800 homeless children in a large four story building surrounded by grounds and gardens.

Bill Cunningham "Facades" photograph collection, circa 1968-1976

This collection consists of 91 photographs by famed New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham of his friend, neighbor, and fellow photographer Editta Sherman posing in period costumes in front of New York City buildings matching the same era as her clothing. Cunningham and Sherman scoured antique shops, street fairs, and auctions for period clothing, and conducted painstaking research to identify appropriate matching buildings. The project took eight years to complete and culminated in a 1977 exhibition at New-York Historical and other venues, as well as the 1978 book Facades.

Boys' Club of New York photographic negatives, 1920-1980

The collection contains 403 photographic negatives produced circa 1920-1980 (bulk 1920-1950) by commercial photographers on behalf of The Boys' Club of New York ("BCNY"). The majority depict young BCNY members engaged in a variety of activities, either at the club's Tompkins Square Building (later renamed Harriman Clubhouse) or at the William Carey Camp in Jamesport, New York. Many of the photographs were published in annual reports, where they served to promote the organization's work.

Burr McIntosh photograph collection, 1898-1910

The Burr McIntosh Photograph Collection consists of 596 glass plate negatives and 3,822 photographic prints dating from 1898 to 1910. Burr McIntosh (1862-1942) distinguished himself in many careers, including those of actor, reporter, publisher, lecturer, cinematographer, and radio pioneer, as well as photographer. While many of these endeavors were short-lived, they gained him prestige and popularity among the stylish set, including prominent figures in the arts, society, and politics, many of whom were his friends and acquaintances.

Charity Organization Society of the City of New York, Tenement House Committee Strong-holds of poverty and Prevalence of disease maps, 1899

These 89 maps, hand-drawn and hand-colored, were created in 1899: under the leadership of Lawrence Veiller in conjunction with the Charity Organization Society of New York for display at the Tenement House Exhibition, held in Manhattan in February 1900. They depict neighborhoods throughout Manhattan, from the Battery to Harlem, in two series: "Strong-holds of poverty" and "Prevalence of disease." Colored dots on the first series indicate the number of families requesting charitable assistance.

Charles Sumner, The anti-slavery enterprise, 1855

Charles Sumner (1811-1874) was a United States senator from Massachusetts and a campaigner against slavery. This is a draft of a version of the speech delivered in New York on May 9, 1855, and published that year under the title "The anti-slavery enterprise." Internal evidence indicates that it was to be delivered to a Boston audience, probably on May 15, 1855. The digital collection includes the draft along with the published version (Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1855).

Civil War envelopes, 1861-1865

The New-York Historical Society's Department of Prints, Photographs, and Architectural Collections owns approximately 3,000 unused envelopes dating from the Civil War years. Of these, 490 were digitized for this project. Most were produced by New York printers between 1861 and 1865:. While some are quite crude, others are beautifully designed and executed, many in color, some gilt. Some envelopes show portraits or caricatures of politicians. A significant New York printer, Charles Magnus, is represented by thirty-six envelopes, many showing Civil War camp scenes derived from photographs.

The 304 Civil War Posters in this collection consist predominantly of recruiting posters, as well as advertisements for public meetings, auctions and social functions pertaining to the Civil War. This collection includes posters from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine. Within the collection are posters for artillery, cavalry and infantry divisions of the United States Army, as well as state National Guard regiments and local regiments such as the Camden Zouaves, West Jersey Rifles and the Mozart Regiment.

Civil War stereographs, 1861-1865

The collection of Civil War stereographs from the New-York Historical Society's Department of Prints, Photographs, and Architectural Collections covers the entire period of the Civil War, from the first Battle of Bull Run through the surrender at Appomattox, and the triumphal parade of Union forces in Washington D.C. Most of the images were made in the eastern theatre of the war, with a majority of scenes from Virginia. Compelling images of death on the battlefield and the destruction of cities, railroads and bridges show the devastating effects of the war.

Collins family letters, 1862-1863

66 autograph letters, signed, between James B. Collins and his brother Joseph T. Collins, their parents John W. and Mary Anne Collins, and a handful of friends and relatives, all dated between February 4, 1862 and July 9, 1863. The bulk of the letters from the front are written by James B. Collins. Also includes a manuscript copy of lyrics to a song entitled "Song of the Louisiana Lowlands." James B. and Joseph T. Collins of New York City enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August of 1862. They were first assigned to the U.S.S. Monticello, and then transferred to the U.S.S. Commodore Barney.

Drucker & Baltes Co., Billboard photograph collection, circa 1918-1934

The 904 glass plate and film negatives in this collection were taken by Drucker & Baltes for the General Outdoor Advertising Company, a billboard company that was formed in 1925 through the merger of the Fulton Group and Thomas Cusack Company. The photographs record the advertisers who bought billboard space at thirteen sites in Manhattan and two sites in the Bronx.

Plates from Huddy & Duval's U.S. military magazine, 1839-1842

This collection consists of eleven plates from the U.S. Military Magazine, a periodical published from 1839 to 1842 in Philadelphia, Pa. The prints were created by Huddy & Duval, a firm of lithographers in Philadelphia. Each issue of the magazine included an illustration of a soldier wearing the uniform of one of Philadelphia's volunteer militias. There are some additional plates of military and naval subjects. Revolutionary Era broadsides, 1763-1783

The New-York Historical Society has an extensive collection of broadsides that document the American Revolution and the tumultuous events leading up to it. Broadsides, the technical term for any document, large or small, printed on one side of a single sheet of paper, served as posters, handbills, official proclamations, advertisements, and conveyors of ballads and poetry. They were plastered on walls, distributed by hand or read out loud and are especially important for the study of the Revolutionary period.

Richard Varick papers, 1743-1871 (bulk 1775-1830)

Richard Varick, born in New Jersey, 1753, served as Captain, deputy muster-master-general, and George Washington's secretary during the Revolutionary war. He was appointed one of the first mayors of New York and served from 1789-1801. He died in 1831. His papers pertain to a variety of subjects, including Varick's command of a company in Alexander McDougall's battalion at Ticonderoga and in Canada during 1775; his service on courts-martial in 1775; problems of the bateau service in northern New York State in 1776; his position as secretary to Gen.

Robert Erskine-Simeon DeWitt maps, 1778-1783

This series of field sketches and finished maps of projected battle sites in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary war was begun by Robert Erskine, geographer and surveyor-general to the Continental Army, and completed by his successor, Simeon De Witt. Robert Erskine (1735-1780) was appointed Geographer to Washington's army in 1777. He surveyed both sides of the Hudson River and a large area covering the adjoining states. Many of the maps are rough field sketches, from which more detailed maps were later drawn.

Robert L. Bracklow photograph collection, 1882-1918 (bulk 1896-1905)

Robert Louis Bracklow (1849-1919) was an amateur photographer and stationer. He was an active member of the Society of Amateur Photographers of New York (later the Camera Club), where he exhibited photographs with fellow amateur Richard H. Lawrence and with Alfred Stieglitz. This digital collection includes 2,084 glass plate negatives from the New-York Historical Society's Robert L. Bracklow Photograph Collection, which contains images of New York City, its immediate environs, and towns throughout New England from 1882 to 1918.

Sarah R. Blunt correspondence, March 4, 1862-July 24, 1865

Sarah R. Blunt (born in 1830 or 1831) was a Union nurse during the Civil War. Leaving her home and family in Brooklyn's third ward, Blunt aided soldiers at Point Lookout, Maryland, and Harper's Ferry, Virginia. This collection includes Sarah R. Blunt's letters to her mother, father, sisters, and cousin in Brooklyn, New York, written from hospitals in Point Lookout, Maryland and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (March 4, 1862-July 24, 1865:). She writes of her living conditions, duties, and the wounded soldiers.

Sebastian Bauman correspondence, 1775-1795 (bulk 1779-1781)

Sebastian Bauman (died 1803) was a Revolutionary War officer. The collection consists of correspondence, 1775-1795 (mostly 1779-1781), when Bauman was in command of West Point. The 177 items include correspondence with Aaron Burr, Gov. George Clinton, Baron Friedrich von Steuben, Col. John Lamb, Gen. Henry Knox, and others. Letters relate to ordnance matters, disadvantages of the American artillery, serious situation at West Point, lack of clothing and supplies and the resultant hardships, news of victories and defeats, other officers, etc.

Selected Papers of William Alexander, Lord Stirling, 1767-1782

Known as the "Republican Earl", William Alexander, "Lord Stirling", was born in 1726 in New York City. He served on the Provincial Councils of New York and New Jersey, and in 1775, joined the Whigs in rebellion against the Crown. In March 1776 Alexander was appointed brigadier general and took chief command of the defense of New York City. In 1777, he was promoted to major-general. He died in January 1783 of fever and gout.

The 7th Regiment records, 1767-1983 (bulk 1830-1947) document the history and administration of the 7th Regiment of New York. The bulk of the material pertains to regimental management, organization, and events, rather than participation in combat and other military activities. The collection contains numerous scrapbooks, visual materials, publications, artifacts, and ephemera. Portions of the collection that have been digitized include The Seventh Regiment Gazette (1886-1940), photographs, photograph albums, and ephemera.

Selections from the Victor Remer Children’s Aid Society Records

The collection consists of selections from the historical records of the Children's Aid Society. The charitable organization was founded in New York City in 1853 to aid, educate, and provide lodging for poor children in the city, and/or to place them in foster homes or with employers outside of the city. The records relate to the Children's Aid Society lodging houses, industrial schools, convalescent homes, health centers, farm schools, and, especially, the emigration programs ("orphan train") which operated during the period 1853-1947.

Sketchbook of 19 folios, 5 blank, and 12 loose sheets, with Draft Riot scenes, 1860-1880

This collection of thirteen sketches (graphite, and black ink and wash on paper) has been digitized from a small sketchbook in the New-York Historical Society's Museum. Most of these Civil War-era sketches were done by an artist identified only as 'J.H.W.', with other sketches inscribed 'Bart del.' Although there are other subjects in the sketchbook, including New York City street scenes and depictions of various types of people, only those sketches depicting New York during the Civil War at the time of the Draft Riots are included in the digital collection.

Susan B. Anthony letters, 1859-1888, undated

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a key figure in the women's suffrage and abolitionist movements in the United States. Five of the letters concern speeches by Frederick Douglass, Theodore Tilton, Julia Ward Howe, and Mary L. Booth, as well as Anthony's own speaking engagements. Recipients include Theodore Tilton and Mary L. Booth. One letter is about remaking a dress. One letter is undated but is probably written by Anthony around November 1895, since it regards Elizabeth Cady Stanton's 80th birthday celebration at the Metropolitan Opera House, organized by Anthony and Mary Lowe Dickinson.

Victor Prevost photograph collection, 1853-1857, undated

Victor Prevost (1820-1881) was born in France and studied art before moving to California in 1847 and to New York in 1850. On a visit back to France in 1853, he learned Gustave Le Gray's calotype process, which was based on the process developed by William Henry Fox Talbot and employed sensitized waxed paper to make photographic negatives. When he returned to New York, Prevost opened a photography studio. The Victor Prevost photograph collection consists of 44 calotype negatives and several generations of contact prints.

Walt Whitman letters, July 27, 1863-September 9, 1863

Walt Whitman's letters to the parents of Erastus Haskell of the 141st New York Volunteers, who died on August 2, 1863 in Armory Square Hospital, Washington, D.C., where Whitman frequently visited the sick and wounded. He wrote the Haskells, of Breseport, New York, on July 27, 1863 to inform them that their son was very ill with typhoid fever. In a letter written August 10 he describes his visits with Erastus and their son's last days. In the final letter, dated September 9, Whitman thanks Mr.

Salvator Cillis correspondence, 1917-1919

Salvator Cillis (September 5, 1892-February 17, 1966) was born in Potenza, Italy and immigrated to New York with his family in 1901. He worked as a sign painter at The Levy Company before being drafted for service in World War I attached to the 77th Division, 306th Infantry. This collection is composed of illustrated letters, postcards and envelopes produced by Cillis during this period (1917-1919).

Sarah R. Blunt (born in 1830 or 1831) was a Union nurse during the Civil War. Leaving her home and family in Brooklyn's third ward, Blunt aided soldiers at Point Lookout, Maryland, and Harper's Ferry, Virginia. This collection includes Sarah R. Blunt's letters to her mother, father, sisters, and cousin in Brooklyn, New York, written from hospitals in Point Lookout, Maryland and Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (March 4, 1862-July 24, 1865:). She writes of her living conditions, duties, and the wounded soldiers.

Sebastian Bauman correspondence, 1775-1795 (bulk 1779-1781)

Sebastian Bauman (died 1803) was a Revolutionary War officer. The collection consists of correspondence, 1775-1795 (mostly 1779-1781), when Bauman was in command of West Point. The 177 items include correspondence with Aaron Burr, Gov. George Clinton, Baron Friedrich von Steuben, Col. John Lamb, Gen. Henry Knox, and others. Letters relate to ordnance matters, disadvantages of the American artillery, serious situation at West Point, lack of clothing and supplies and the resultant hardships, news of victories and defeats, other officers, etc.

Selected Papers of William Alexander, Lord Stirling, 1767-1782

Known as the "Republican Earl", William Alexander, "Lord Stirling", was born in 1726 in New York City. He served on the Provincial Councils of New York and New Jersey, and in 1775, joined the Whigs in rebellion against the Crown. In March 1776 Alexander was appointed brigadier general and took chief command of the defense of New York City. In 1777, he was promoted to major-general. He died in January 1783 of fever and gout.

The 7th Regiment records, 1767-1983 (bulk 1830-1947) document the history and administration of the 7th Regiment of New York. The bulk of the material pertains to regimental management, organization, and events, rather than participation in combat and other military activities. The collection contains numerous scrapbooks, visual materials, publications, artifacts, and ephemera. Portions of the collection that have been digitized include The Seventh Regiment Gazette (1886-1940), photographs, photograph albums, and ephemera.

Selections from the Victor Remer Children’s Aid Society Records

The collection consists of selections from the historical records of the Children's Aid Society. The charitable organization was founded in New York City in 1853 to aid, educate, and provide lodging for poor children in the city, and/or to place them in foster homes or with employers outside of the city. The records relate to the Children's Aid Society lodging houses, industrial schools, convalescent homes, health centers, farm schools, and, especially, the emigration programs ("orphan train") which operated during the period 1853-1947.

Sketchbook of 19 folios, 5 blank, and 12 loose sheets, with Draft Riot scenes, 1860-1880

This collection of thirteen sketches (graphite, and black ink and wash on paper) has been digitized from a small sketchbook in the New-York Historical Society's Museum. Most of these Civil War-era sketches were done by an artist identified only as 'J.H.W.', with other sketches inscribed 'Bart del.' Although there are other subjects in the sketchbook, including New York City street scenes and depictions of various types of people, only those sketches depicting New York during the Civil War at the time of the Draft Riots are included in the digital collection.

Susan B. Anthony letters, 1859-1888, undated

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a key figure in the women's suffrage and abolitionist movements in the United States. Five of the letters concern speeches by Frederick Douglass, Theodore Tilton, Julia Ward Howe, and Mary L. Booth, as well as Anthony's own speaking engagements. Recipients include Theodore Tilton and Mary L. Booth. One letter is about remaking a dress. One letter is undated but is probably written by Anthony around November 1895, since it regards Elizabeth Cady Stanton's 80th birthday celebration at the Metropolitan Opera House, organized by Anthony and Mary Lowe Dickinson.

Victor Prevost photograph collection, 1853-1857, undated

Victor Prevost (1820-1881) was born in France and studied art before moving to California in 1847 and to New York in 1850. On a visit back to France in 1853, he learned Gustave Le Gray's calotype process, which was based on the process developed by William Henry Fox Talbot and employed sensitized waxed paper to make photographic negatives. When he returned to New York, Prevost opened a photography studio. The Victor Prevost photograph collection consists of 44 calotype negatives and several generations of contact prints.

Walt Whitman letters, July 27, 1863-September 9, 1863

Walt Whitman's letters to the parents of Erastus Haskell of the 141st New York Volunteers, who died on August 2, 1863 in Armory Square Hospital, Washington, D.C., where Whitman frequently visited the sick and wounded. He wrote the Haskells, of Breseport, New York, on July 27, 1863 to inform them that their son was very ill with typhoid fever. In a letter written August 10 he describes his visits with Erastus and their son's last days. In the final letter, dated September 9, Whitman thanks Mr.
