Item Details Content statement

Description
Letter from John Nelson Lloyd, Lloyd Neck, to George W. Strong, New York, discussing the cholera epidemic which is subsiding in New York but continues in the western and southern parts of the country, speculating on the epidemic's effects on enslaved persons and suggesting it would be a mercy to them and morally instructive to their enslavers if it killed them all, and giving his opinion that Andrew Jackson will be reelected leading to civil war; in spite of this, he intends to vote which he has seldom done in the past; Lloyd also reports on the good progress of his crops and livestock, the health of Strong's brother Thomas and nephew Selah, and his neighbors; second leaf torn with loss to a few words.
