East Hampton book of laws, June 24, 1665.

A 1798 copy of the "Duke's Laws" promulgated by Governor Richard Nicolls at a convention of representatives of the English and Dutch towns held at Hempstead, March 1, 1665. This copy was made from the copy at East Hampton dated June 24, 1665 and includes amendments and additions from [June?] 1665 through October 13, 1675. The laws are based on those from the other British colonies in North America and cover both civil and criminal matters and establish civil offices and courts in the colony of New York.

Notes and observations on the town of East Hampton at the east end of Long Island by John Lyon Gardiner, April 1798.

Description and history of the town of East Hampton and neighboring towns in eastern Suffolk County written by John Lyon Gardiner of the Isle of Wight [i.e. Gardiners Island] at the request of the Rev. Samuel Miller of New York. Includes town boundaries and the physical features of the area, descriptions of agriculture and fisheries, and the social conditions of the inhabitants. The first part focuses on the period of settlement and establishment of the towns and government in the 17th century and the post-settlement decline of the Native American inhabitants.

Stephen Jayne account book, 1726-1735

Account book, 1726-1735, kept by Stephen Jayne, blacksmith of the Town of Brookhaven, New York, recording customer accounts for smithy work. Entries include name of customer, cost of work, and type of job done. Jobs include shoeing horses as well as the making and repairing of domestic implements, farm tools, plows, chains, mattocks, forks, knives, guns, etc. Includes customers from several prominent Brookhaven families including members of the Smith, Hulse, Brewster, and Strong families, as well as several other Jayne family members.

David Gardiner and John Lyon Gardiner account book, 1757-1804

Account book, 1757-1804, of the Gardiner family of Gardiners Island, N.Y. It was begun by David Gardiner (1738-1774), sixth Proprietor of Gardiners Island, and continued after his death by his son, John Lyon Gardiner (1770-1816), the seventh Proprietor. David Gardiner's entries date approximately 1757-1766 and primarily record sales of agricultural products including grain, cheese, hay, and wool, and transactions for various merchandise and services.

Merchant of Oyster Bay, Long Island. Daybook, 1750-1751, recording small sales of rum, fabric, sugar, molasses, and other foodstuffs, clothing, and various small goods. Includes sales to members of the Townsend, Weekes, Wright, and Seaman families and many others including Ned Lane, a Native American, and at least two African Americans. Wanting two or more leaves.

Solomon Townsend ledger, 1821-1823

Merchant and resident of New York City. Ledger, 1821-1823, recording personal and business transactions, as well as the accounts of his mother, Mrs. Anne Townsend, and transactions with other members of his family, including siblings Hannah, Jacob, and Peter S. Townsend. Written when Solomon Townsend was a young clerk aged 15 through 17, the ledger was likely more of an exercise than an actual business concern. The volume has two sequences of pages inverted with respect to each other beginning at each cover and converging toward the middle (tête-bêche style).

Original manuscript prompt copy of the play "Columbia and Britannia" by Jabez Peck, created for a performance of the work at the East Hampton Academy (Clinton Academy, East Hampton, Long Island) in April of 1786. Peck was a scholar and teacher of Greek and Latin at the Clinton Academy. Manuscript bears the owner's inscription by John Lyon Gardiner of East Hampton who is listed for the role of Arator in the manuscript's opening list of dramatis personae. Other cast members include John C.

Lloyd family record book, 1654-1894.

In 1686, James Lloyd, Boston merchant, acquired the Long Island peninsula then known as Horse Neck (and later as Lloyd Neck) from his wife, Grizzell, who had inherited it and other property from Latimer Sampson. The same year, Governor Thomas Dongan issued a patent establishing Lloyd Neck together with another property as the Manor of Queen's Village, and Lloyd as the Lord of the manor. Following James Lloyd's death, control of the property passed to his son, Henry Lloyd.
