Minutes contain remarks by Samuel Osgood concerning a suggestion that the Society might be instrumental in the formation of a New York Academy--"Perhaps the day will come when our earnest and active men will think more of generous studies than of the pursuit of wealth and luxury. We have enough of Corinth and need something more of Athens." Frederic De Peyster reported on the donation of additional maps by Simeon DeWitt from Richard Varick DeWitt, who had originally donated the "DeWitt Maps" [i.e. the Robert Erskine-Simeon DeWitt maps, surveys completed by George Washington's geographers during the Revolutionary War] in 1845, and a donation of "... an Index to the Dutch Records of the Province of New York from 1638 to 1664 ..." by Jacob Roosevelt, ship chandler.
