William Barker Cushing (4 Nov. 1842-17 Dec. 1874) An officer in the U.S. Navy who fought for the Union during the Civil War. He is best known for sinking the Confederate ironclad CSS Albemarle in a night raid in 1864, for which he received the Thanks of Congress
