Note
The Copperhead Movement, composed almost entirely of Democrats, criticized Republican politicians, including President Abraham Lincoln. One of its foremost members, Clement Laird Vallandigham (1820-1871), a southern sympathizer, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1857-1863), and was eventually exiled to the southern states.
