The Federalist is included on nearly every list of influential books because it is due, at least in part, to this work that the United States Constitution was ratified. Its 85 essays were first published in newspapers and then issued in two volumes. Written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Each essay signed: Publius. This New-York Historical copy has a label tipped into each volume: "Printed and bound, at Franklin's Head, no. 41, Hanover-Square"; the title pages inscribed: "John Pintard".
