America had an army and navy that every man, woman and child in America was proud of. But officials at Washington in close touch with developments knew that if we expected to meet the problem of raising an army of millions of men, that some equitable system of army service must be provided for. Hence, the National army, composed of men between the ages of 18 and 45 years was organized under the selective service plan. To provide officers for the National army, a series of training camps were established. Three months of inten- sive training was given to those who entered, under regular army officers and French and British veteran in- structors. From all parts of the United States there is a steady stream of selective service men and volunteers flowing to cantonments and army camps, where they receive the necessary physical and 4
